City on a Hill is a community growing by the grace of God. In order to steward the added numbers, workload, and ministry opportunities at City on a Hill, we are growing our team of pastors! We’re excited to announce the appointment of Dave Miers, who will be joining our team in early September 2014. Dave is a Jesus guy, who currently preaches Jesus as a Youth Pastor for the youth of St. Faith’s Narrabeen, on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Dave is a sought after speaker, prolific blogger, husband to Rowena, and a dad to Sam, Tom, and Beth. We’d love you to meet him!
Dave, tell us about yourself. Who are you and what do you like doing?
I’m 33 years old and have been married to Rowena for 11 years. I enjoy walking and going to cafes with Rowena and ‘making Beth smile’ is on the top of my daily to-do list. A fun day with Sam and Tom would involve riding scooters and eating Sushi. I like playing and watching soccer, especially during the World Cup! Having grown up near the coast, I like (trying) to surf and taking Instagram shots of the beach.
You’re a man who loves Jesus; tell us how that happened?
I grew up in a Christian family and have always claimed to follow Jesus. However, there were two big turning points in my Jesus story.
I was a good kid and didn’t get involved in lots of the dumb things that my friends at high school were doing. To be honest, I thought I was better than them and that God would accept me because I was good. This changed at the age of 17 when at a youth conference the preacher explained the idea of grace from Luke 18:9-14. That is, we are acceptable before God by trusting in what Jesus has DONE and not what we DO.
The other turning point was when I started going to a new church where I understood that the death and resurrection of Jesus needs to impact every part of life. And so I love Jesus because of His love for me shown at the cross.
What have you been doing since you met Jesus? What’s the point of your life?
Soon after finishing school I was captivated by the need for the world to know Jesus! So I began to volunteer in whatever way I could at my church to share Jesus with others. I spent a short time as a Primary School teacher, but was convicted to give up my day job and to give even more time to the task of making Jesus known.
I worked as a Youth Pastor at my home church for 4 years and then was further equipped for mission and ministry at Moore Theological College. For the past 4 years I’ve been working for a great church in Sydney. I have also enjoyed opportunities to share Jesus more broadly in Sydney and Australia.
My life is all about Jesus and my passion is to keep preaching the cross of Christ to the next generation.
So you’re coming down to Melbourne and joining City on a Hill’s team of pastors in September. What’s led you to want to do something like this?
I met Guy Mason not long after City on a Hill began and have been cheering and praying from a distance at what God has been doing ever since. I love the simplicity of ‘knowing Jesus and making Jesus known’ and the clear vision of bringing everything under this banner.
While there are still many people who need to know Jesus in Sydney, we were keen to think about how we could be part of God’s work further afield. So after a few conversations and meetings with Guy and other pastors, it was evident that we share a similar philosophy of ministry and passion to reach the lost for the glory of God. God is obviously doing great things in and through City on a Hill and we want to be part of the action!
What are you looking to do at City on a Hill and on into the future?
In the short term, I am looking forward to being part of the team in Melbourne and using our gifts in whatever way we can to serve God’s people and make Jesus known.
God willing, in the medium term, I will lead a City on a Hill church plant. So I hope to become part of the City on a Hill family, learn from the team, grow in my leadership and be sent out to continue knowing Jesus and making Jesus known.
