City on a Hill would not exist without the many faithful volunteers who love Jesus, love the church, and are actively on mission with us to Know Jesus and Make Jesus Known. Over the coming months, we want to spotlight through this On Mission blog series a number of our awesome volunteers who give generously of their time and talent by serving in various ministries and teams throughout the church.
Today we meet Rick.
What do you do? (Outside of serving at COAH)
If we’re talking work, I’m a graphic designer. If not, I still like occupying myself with creative stuff that doesn't involve staring at a screen. I like taking photos and never getting around to processing them (need to get on the computer for that) and pottery and well... I already have plenty of hobbies lined up for retirement seem to be constantly adding new ones.
You serve as part of the Vision team that puts all the slides and videos up on the screen for our Sunday services. Why is your team critical to the mission of City on a Hill?
Some people absorb information more readily through their ears and others through their eyes. I belong in the former group, so the care taken to speak to someone like me from the first time I came to this church really impacted me. From basic stuff like having the lyrics up in a timely manner so I can meditate on them before I sing them, to having God's word on screen while the preacher delivers a message, it's all "knowing Jesus and making him known".
What does it look like to serve on your team?
As I mentioned, my team works alongside all aspects of the church service, so we arrive a couple hours before the service to set up all the equipment and work out any issues. The music team relies on us to feed their lyrics through to them so we get a feel for the service as they rehearse. I love seeing everyone scurrying around using their very specific talents to honour the church. Everyone has their specific task but on any given week someone will be having trouble and need a hand. It's just great seeing people step up and support each other. I'm not a morning person by any means but it's worth being there early for the corporate prayer that we have together before the service starts. It's just a great opportunity to bring things before God and still our hearts after a time of activity and to reframe our thoughts on why we gather like this in the first place.
What do you enjoy most about serving on your team?
I love that there’s a space for a person like me to use their abilities in service. When my wife and I first moved to Melbourne (me from Perth and her from Tokyo via Perth) we lived in Docklands and literally stumbled upon the church when it was running in James Squire brewhouse. From the first service I felt I had found my home. Someone at this church cared about the things that I cared about. When I looked at any visual material, the palette was great, the fonts were well selected and kerning on everything was given love. The materials for every series of sermons explored the themes in a way that allowed the visual material to support the teaching. It says to me "Let's serve with excellence, Jesus is worthy of my best efforts" and I love serving at a church that acts in this way.
What opportunities currently exist to serve on your team?
Serving on the vision team might be a little abstract at a glance. I think people see the band and think “I can play an instrument, I could serve” whereas they may see the laptop and the person peering at it and wonder what exactly is going. You might think it looks like something to be left to the professionals. If you are familiar with such high level computing concepts as moving a "cursor" on screen and pressing "buttons" you have what it takes to help us run the vision component of a service at City on a Hill.
Because, as I mentioned it's perhaps not such an obvious area of service we definitely could use a few more hearts and hands. If you have a desire to make Jesus known, to serve the body of Christ in a visual medium I / we would love to hear from you. I know there are many people in our church that would be blessed by serving on the vision team.
Their are many opportunities to serve at City on a Hill, and each of these opportunities exist because they are a crucial part of our mission to Know Jesus and Make Jesus Known. If you are not currently serving at City on a Hill, or you know someone who isn’t, now is the time to sign up to serve and be part of the mission. If you’ve got an interest or skills for this team then join Rick on mission by serving as part of the Vision team!
