In November 2012 I was inspired to become part of Restore, a City on a Hill ministry that seeks to engage with and care for people involved in the sex industry. The aim of those in our group is to build meaningful relationships with sex workers and ultimately to make Jesus known in that community.
Some of the Restore team visit brothels in areas of Melbourne in conjunction with the Salvation Army Brothel Support Team. Earlier this year a number of Korean and Chinese women working in the brothels visited by the team expressed a keen interest in improving their English. It was exciting to realise that God was creating an avenue to be able to connect with these women outside of their workplace and assist them in such an important and practical way.
I help teach one of the two weekly classes that have been established with the help of many volunteers, and it has been such a delight to see the girls attend – particularly as for many of these women even making the initial step of coming along can be fraught with barriers and fear of the unknown. The initiative is still evolving and taking shape and much prayer is needed for direction and growth.
Restore also builds awareness of the various issues that men and women face in the sex industry and I am continuing to learn how overwhelming these issues are. But knowing that God is much greater than any of this, I am reminded that I am to put my trust in Him and that Jesus is powerful to save even in the darkest of situations.
