The start of the year is always an exciting time for us at City on a Hill, with lots of new people joining our community, and others stepping up into new ministries. We want to be a community of life, love and mission, and each one of us has the opportunity to shape this life together, bringing our creativity and passion to the mission God has given us.
We want to help each person know their value, and so we are working hard to make our community closer, even as it grows wider. We have some exciting initiatives in the works – one of which was the very enjoyable Community Picnics. On February 1 picnics were held across the north, south, east and west of Melbourne, as well as events in the CBD and Geelong. For newcomers this was a great introduction to our community, and those who have been around a while had a great chance to connect with brothers and sisters in their neighbourhood.
That weekend also marked the start of our new series, ‘The King’s Queen’, which will take us through the book of Esther – a gripping narrative full of intrigue, drama and suspense. We will meet Kings and Queens, heroes and villains – and within every twist and turn of plot we will sense the work of the mighty God who works all things according to his good will. Never sighted but always evident, he will emerge as the great savior of his people, using the ordinary to achieve his majestic purposes. Make sure you don’t miss a moment of this thrilling story; join us at our Sunday services in Melbourne and Geelong, or follow along with our podcast. To get even more out of it, jump online and download the series ebook; it’s got lots of great articles introducing the main characters, explaining the historical context, and exploring the themes of the book.
We’ll also be unpacking the book in our Community Groups – small communities where God’s word is studied and lives are shared. We have around 50 groups spread across our city, with several new groups opening up; we now have groups stretching as far out as Dandenong, Frankston and Blackburn, with a clutch of groups around the CBD, too. There are three groups in the western suburbs, with more groups primed to start in March in preparation for the launch of City on a Hill West, while Geelong already has five groups. We also have several groups based on social networks, where God’s people gather to support each other in mission, developing relationships around movies, martial arts or motherhood!
Please pray for our community in 2014. It is such a joy to be among God’s people, and to experience the body of Christ, working together, serving each other, and being on mission in our city. Pray that we may truly be a place of life, love and mission, as God extends our knowledge, deepens our love, and equips us to serve him.
On behalf of our pastors we thank you for your ongoing partnership in the gospel.
